Dear Gorringe’s clients,

I’m Lottie Cole, a Sussex based artist, and it is a huge pleasure to introduce the catalogue for Gorringe's Summer Fine Sale, 2024.

Collaborating with Gorringe’s to promote this sale is particularly special to me as, like many people in Sussex and the surrounding area, I’ve grown up with an awareness of and fondness for Gorringe’s. Family members have bought and sold from Gorringe’s over the years, and our own homes contain much loved items bought in these sales.

I really enjoy buying art and antiques at auction; I love the theatre of it and the adrenalin rush you get when your lot comes up! The auction world is also a huge source of inspiration for my paintings; though mostly of domestic settings, they are a reflection of the owner revealed through their possessions. Every element of a home or a room gives you a clue to the owner, even if they aren’t present. When I’m painting, I develop an imaginary character and then create an imagined interior to fit with their taste - from the curtains and cushions, furniture, even through to the wallpaper they choose. Quite often I turn to old auction catalogues to help with my virtual furnishing of the room.

Given all of this, the opportunity to collaborate with Gorringe’s was an offer not to be missed. Not only did I get to window shop and curate an edit of the Summer Fine Sale, but I also got to contribute to this catalogue which will live on well beyond the sale and perhaps will one day inspire other artists, interior decorators or students of the arts.

You can find beautiful photos of my edit below and on the title page for each department. Each piece was chosen by me because of its uniqueness, beauty, and its history (whether real or imagined by me!).

I hope you enjoy browsing the items in this catalogue as much as I enjoyed curating my edit. Best of luck on sale day, and I hope you find treasures that bring joy and inspiration to your home.

All power to your bidding arm!

Lottie Cole
