A Connoisseur's Collection of Modern First Editions
A Connoisseur's Collection of Modern First Editions to be auctioned as part of the Antiquarian Book Auction at Gorringes on Wednesday 24th March
An extensive collection of modern first editions belonging to Mr. Richard Cleeve (1944-2009) are to come under the hammer at Gorringes on Wednesday 24th March, with an estimate of over £11,000.
Mr. Cleeve, who lived in Eastbourne, was the former Head of Humanities and French at the University of South Bank in London. An astute and avid collector, he started buying books in the mid-1960s from various sources, including book dealers, charity shops, car boot sales or as soon as they were published.
The collection features works by both literary and bestseller writers such as Agatha Christie, Iris Murdoch and Martin Amis, manoy of which are signed.
On the strength of Mr. Cleeve's collection a second important local collection of modern first editions was consigned which includes a signed copy of George Orwell's 'Down and Out in Paris' (£2,500-3,500), William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' (32,000-3,000) and Grahan Greene's 'Journey without Maps' (£4,000-6,000).
For enthusiasts of American literature there is a very rare signed first edition of Mark Twain's 'Roughing It' (£1,000-1,500), which he dedicated to the entrepreneur and agriculatural scientis Sir John Bennett, who became a close friend of Twain's when he visited England in 1871.
