Items Collected by the de la Mare Family

A selection of paintings, furniture and works of art belonging to Richard de la Mare, renowned connoisseur of Oriental ceramics and former chairman of Faber and Faber publishers, and his father, the celebrated writer Walter de la Mare, are to be auctioned by Gorringes on 9th and 10th December.

All the items come from Tithe House Barn, Cumnor, in Oxford, owned by the de la Mare family from 1980-2009. The family converted the house from a barn in the 1980s and it was home to Richard de la Mare and his daughter Tilly (Professor Albinia de la Mare, the distinguished palaeographer, 1932-2001) for much of their life.

Leading the sale is an early 18th century English school landscape, which has an estimate of £5,000-8,000. There is also a large selection of 18th and 19th century European and English furniture, including a sideboard known to have belonged to Walter de la Mare, as well as Oriental ceramics, silver and textiles. Five volumes by Osbert Sitwell, most of them with dedications from him to Walter de la Mare are to be sold in February 2010.
