Rare 18thC Silver Theatre Tokens from the Theatre Royal in Bristol
Two Rare Silver Theatre Tokens from the Theatre Royal in Bristol
Auction: Thursday 3rd September
Two silver theatre tokens issued by the Theatre Royal in Bristol in 1766 sold for a total of £2,400 in our September sale. And the added bonus is that they are still valid today!
Up to 50 tokens were originally produced by the theatre, which opened in 1766, as a way of encouraging a loyal following amonst theatregoers. The coins are each inscribed with a unique number (these are nos 23 & 31).
Home today of the Bristol Old Vic, the Theatre Royal is currently undergoing a major refurbishment and 50 more ticket tokens have been produced for benefactors who donate £50,000 or more.
