A rare Victorian four player chess set, with red stained and natural ivory, ebony and boxwood pegged pieces on a folding golden oak stand with plaque 'George Hope Verney, President of the London Four Handed Chess Club, 1885', with original leather case, 20ins, Kings 2ins

Red side:
One knight with replaced peg in wood
One bishop with replaced peg in wood
Queen with chip to crown over two spikes
Most of red staining lacking on all pieces
White side:
Rook, bishop and queen all lacking their pegs
Ivory on this (and red set) with some minor hair line cracks
Box wood side:
Bishop with a replaced peg
Both knight''s with a slight chip to the foot rim
Rook with a chip to the root rim
Ebony side:
Queen with chip to crown over two spikes
King with a later wood peg
One pawn with a chip to the foot
One rook with a slight chip to the base
Case with general scratches and some belmishes throughout. One hair line crack to short side but not serious, brass mounts dulled. Large engraved brass hinge plate structurally ok but one of the small locking catches missing and thus only one of the locks is secure to block off the hinged end of the case. Leather case worn around edges, lacking buckle and with a tear but generally fair.
